Platinum is a white metal. It is white enough to not need rhodium plating like white gold. Platinum is much heavier than gold and much stronger too. In fact Platinum jewellery is usually about 95% pure.
White gold was originally intended to be a substitute for platinum. This is because platinum is a good deal more expensive than gold. It is a prestigious choice, reflected by the number of companies that call their top of the range lines their "platinum" range.
While gold and other metals will wear and scratch reasonably easily, platinum is hard wearing, although it is not scratch proof.
Platinum is most commonly alloyed with irridium, ruthenium or palladium.
Platinum jewellery may become dull over time as a patina of wear develops. This can be easily reversed by getting your jeweller to give it a polish to restore its original shine. Buffing with a soft cloth, like you use on your glasses, will also help maintain the lustre.
