Ring Sizes

Ring sizes in Ireland and the UK are measured in a system of letters. This differs to America and Canada who use a numbered system for ring sizes. At Eternity Jewellery we use the Irish system of letters. There is a conversion chart at the bottom of this page. Please note that while the conversion table should provide a close enough guide to give you a good fit, it is not 100% accurate due to a difference in graduation in the two systems.

Why ring sizes and not finger sizes?

Jewellers measure ring sizes rather than finger sizes. There is a very good reason for this. Rings are uniform in shape and are thus easier to measure. Another even better reason is that fingers can fluctuate in size depending on many conditions.

Conditions that can effect your finger size

Atmospheric conditions, heat, time of day, time of month, pregnancy, weight loss or weight gain, exercise and hand dominance are just some of the conditions that can result in the size of your finger fluctuating.

Tips when getting your ring size measured

  1. Get measured more than once.
  2. Get measured on an "average" day.
  3. Do not measure yourself, go to a jewellers.
  4. The ring should fit quite snugly and you should feel some resistance when you try to take it off again.
  5. Narrow rings should be slightly tighter than wider rings.
  6. Fingers on your dominant hand (ie. if you are right handed this is your dominant hand) are likely to be a half size larger than those of your other hand.

Ring size tips for men (particularly relating to wedding rings)

If you are not used to wearing a ring then the correct sized ring is going to feel tight on your finger. Remember also that if you are particularly warm or have just been excercising then your fingers will be slightly more swollen than usual.

A ring that is too large can easily slip off your finger (particularly on a cold day. It is very important that you ask your jewellers advice on ring sizes and get measured more than once. After all, it is not easy explaining to a new wife that you lost your wedding ring!

Ring size conversion chart

The main purpose of this chart is for converting from American ring sizes to Irish ring sizes. Therefore mm measurements are exact for the US, but not for Ireland / UK. This is because the scales do not exactly match. This is the reason why some of the half sizes in the Irish measurements are not showing.

For people in countries where the Irish / UK method is used you will not need to make any conversions to use this shop as all ring sizes are already in that scale.
